D.L. & W. Terminal

River side of old D.L.&W.  R.R. Terminal

Delaware, Lakawana, and Western Rail Road Terminal was built in 1917. The structure served both passenger and commercial freight purposes with access to the Buffalo River. The terminal design held countless architectural innovations for the time and was used by D. L. and W. until 1962. In 1979 the property, looted and neglected, became property of The NFTA and today serves as terminus for the Buffalo Metro Subway.

Kostas

Fresco @ Kostas
Ode on a Grecian Diner

Thou still unfinished pile of fries,
Thou lamb gyro of tasted and savoured time,
Sprightly waiter, who canst thus order
A rice pudding more sweet than our rhyme:

You get the idea... Kostas Family Restaurant has been offering a haven for seekers of comfort food for 39 years. This beacon of Hertel Avenue has seen the evolution of this North Buffalo neighborhood over the last few decades. Today, this stretch of Hertel Avenue is one of the city's go to destinations for restaurants, shopping and night spots.

Statler

Statler Building 2016
Straight out of the Roaring Twenties, comes Ellsworth Statler's grand hotel that crowned the Queen City at the beginning of the last century. Recently, the old place has had its ups and downs, but continues to hang in there even amidst calls to raze the once glorious digs. Too many fans in Buffalo and around the country will not stand for that disappointing end. If her sister hotel,
The Hotel Pennsylvania is still kicking, then certainly this Statler can find a new thriving life in the Buffalo Renaissance.

Elvishly Good Stuff

Exceptional Vegan Chocolate

Congratulations to my former colleague a her husband on quitting their day jobs and opening their dream shop. Today was the soft opening for Thinking Elvish Fantasy Chocolate, beautifully realized in the old Tabree restaurant on Elmwood. All of the ingredients for their imaginative and flavor-filled artisian chocolates are organic and fair trade from Peru. They roast their own cocao beans, make their own almond milk, and design their own everything, and the results are truly unique. One of the most delightful things, beside the chocolate flavors, was the cold brew made from the cocao shells after roasting. The flavor was something between an exquisite tea and a fine coffee. It was truly something untasted and unexpected. Best, best wishes to Lacy and Tim Christ and their beautiful kids on a very unique take on chocolates and soon to come ice creams.

Butler Mansion

Chandelier, Butler Mansion
The Butler Mansion, also known as the Williams-Butler House is located at Delaware Avenue and North Street. The home was built and occupied by two of Buffalo's most prominent and storied families, after its creation on what is considered the city's Millionaires Row. The home was completed in 1899 and is actually the second mansion at that location. The first, which was demolished, belonged to Aaron Rumsey.
The families and architects involved in the building's history and surrounding development read like a
Who's Who of early Buffalo history. Check out the link below.

St. Mary's School for the Deaf

For one hundred and sixty-three years, St. Mary's School for the Deaf has served deaf and special needs students of Western New York. A caring and dedicated group of teachers, administrators and support staff, deliver a warm, as well as state of the art education to a great group of hardworking young people. They continue the tradition of a school that was the first academic institution for the deaf in the United States. In 1883 a parcel of land was purchased at Main Street and Dewey where instruction of students took place in a building called the Branch House. The majority of students continued to study at their original location on Edward Street, until the formidable building you see today was completed in1898. Subsequent additions were made throughout the years, making it the comprehensive facility it is currently. The main building is a sprawling historical treasure in its Parkside neighborhood, with a few of the trees on the grounds dating back to its inception. The interior holds many jewels, from its extensive original woodwork and the stained glass of the old chapel, to the SMSD Museum and Archive. A tour of this fascinating structure is a worthwhile endeavor, not only for the architectural appeal, but as an insight into the rich history of deaf citizens and education in the Buffalo region.

Honoring Those Who Served and Serve Today

Veteran's Day - Buffalo Naval Park

Originally celebrated in 1919 as Armistice Day to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I, Veteran's Day became a national holiday in 1938. Today there is a Veteran's Day celebration at the Buffalo and Erie Co. Naval and Military Park. In addition to a vast amount of historical information regarding this regions contribution to various war efforts, you will find some rather impressive military artifacts. These range from photos and medals, to an actual submarine, a destroyer and cruiser, the USS Little Rock, which can be camped on over night.

Symphony Circle

Another resplendent autumn day in the Queen City. Our colors are finally starting to show. It is hard to find a more sublime perch to witness the shower of colorful leaves and brilliant sunshine than from a bench on Symphony Circle. Originally named "The Circle"in 1868, it was and is a link in our beloved Olmsted Parkway system. Surrounding the Circle are beautiful homes dating back to its inception as well as the restored Birge Mansion, Klienhan's Music Hall and The First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo. The church first used in1891 by the city's oldest religious congregation started in 1812. Due to the influence and popularity of the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Circle was renamed Symphony Circle in 1958.

Big windows, hot coffee and fresh scones, Tipico is not your typical coffee shop. The cafe, located on Fargo Street, was a sun filled, inviting destination for the studious set on an autumn Saturday. Two For One

Michael Testone, Bella Pascal Zionts, Jon Abrahams and Matthew Quinn
(Writer/Producer)          (Actress)           (Director)       (Cinematographer)

The world premiere of Two For One kicked off the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival tonight. The highly anticipated directorial debut of Jon Abrahams, featuring the city of Buffalo and many of its talented citizens, played for its first real audience. The longtime friendship between Director Abrahams and Cinematographer Matt Quinn (Buffalo native) exposed the director to Buffalo in his youth. When the story of Two For One developed, Buffalo seemed a perfect setting. Utilizing both NY/Hollywood production and local crew/ talent like Isabel Zionts (pictured above), the production found its chemistry.  The packed Dipson theater was filled with laughter and teary eyes, as the film delighted on this opening night of the BDFFF.  Mayor Byron Brown and Rich Wall, Director of Operations for the Buffalo Niagara Film Office, were on hand to welcome Abrahams back to town. The festival runs from November 4-13 with opportunity to see this film, as well as dozens of other features, shorts and videos. From here, Two For One moves on to some film festivals and eventual wider theatrical release.
Mr. Abrahams' positive production experience in Buffalo promises to see him back here as soon as June to start a new project.

Elvis Has Left The Building

Elvis Costello and the Imposters

Every 35 years or so, one must see Elvis Costello because he only improves. The incomprable Declan Patrick Macmanus played his 1982 album, Imperial Bedroom, at Shea's Buffalo. One of the greatest musians of our time, in one of the country's most beautiful theaters, was a perfect match. This kind of musicianship deserves the physical and acoustic splendor that is Shea's.

Fontana Boathouse
Almost one hundred years after he sketched the design, Frank Lloyd Wright's boathouse was brought to fruition. In 2007 The Fontana Boathouse was completed near the Peace Bridge at the mouth of the Niagara River. On this, the first night of November, young people in shorts scrub their sculling shells in the warm evening air as walkers stroll the break wall under the bridge. The vision is fulfilled.
