Birge Mansion

The Birge Mansion

The stately Birge Mansion still shows up well, 120 years after it was built. On a fine spring afternoon, the Birge looks out over Symphony Circle towards Klienhan's Music Hall. Truth be told, the mansion had a serious episode of decline, peaking in, you guessed it, the wonderful 70's. The faded beauty was ready for demolition but thankfully was rescued and restored in an effort that spanned well over a decade. If you have a chance to stroll the walk on Symphony Circle (restored as well, not too long ago) be sure to stop and appreciate one of Buffalo's great homes, nearly lost to history, and to neglect. Former owners and current tenants provide some spectacular photos of the home's interior in its heyday- see their link.

Symphony Circle

Another resplendent autumn day in the Queen City. Our colors are finally starting to show. It is hard to find a more sublime perch to witness the shower of colorful leaves and brilliant sunshine than from a bench on Symphony Circle. Originally named "The Circle"in 1868, it was and is a link in our beloved Olmsted Parkway system. Surrounding the Circle are beautiful homes dating back to its inception as well as the restored Birge Mansion, Klienhan's Music Hall and The First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo. The church first used in1891 by the city's oldest religious congregation started in 1812. Due to the influence and popularity of the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Circle was renamed Symphony Circle in 1958.
