Oshun

Oshun
Oshun is rocking their Dollar Oyster Night at the charming former Waldorf Astoria Luncheon Counter and Florsheim Shoe Store, corner of Washington and East Huron. The building, built in 1946, has been splendidly redesigned to complement the original structure, replete with cozy elegant booths, Art Deco flourishes and frescoes by Sarah Fonzi.

Pausa

Star People @ Pausa
A great space for the great talent of Buffalo, Pausa is definitely filling a need in the Queen City. Tucked away on Wadsworth St. in Allentown, a stellar line up of musicians and visual artists grace what is truly an art house. Artvoice, deservedly, named Pausa Art House," Best New Art Space" in 2014. A group effort has put together a great gathering spot in a wonderfully renovated Allentown Building. See link for full story and schedule.

Happy 185th Birthday

Coit House, Virginia Street

As Buffalo celebrates its 185th birthday, we thought it only fitting to visit one of the city's historic homes. This one, technically, predates the city. Still got it. Considered by many to be the oldest house in Buffalo, the Coit House, on Virginia Street, was born from the ashes of the fire set by the British in the Battle of Buffalo. Washington and Buffalo were destroyed by the British in the War of 1812. The Burning of Buffalo actually occurred in December of 1813. The Coit House, as it exists today, was built in 1815, with the Incorporation of the City of Buffalo taking place only 17 years later, on April 20th of 1832.

Dyngus Day

Getting ready for the Dyngus Day Parade at the Polish Cadets on Amherst St.
Dyngus Day or Wet Monday, as it is known in Poland, is celebrated on Easter Monday. The wet comes from the tradition of boys dousing girls with water and gently whipping them with pussy willows. Yes, Easter undoubtedly borrows heavily from pagan tradition and the origins of Dyngus Day predate Christianity by 1000
years. As far as the holiday in America, you are at the epicenter of its exponentially growing popularity, right here in Buffalo, where pierogi, dancing, libations, sausage and sweets will abound. No worries, the girls get to whip the boys with pussy willows on Easter Tuesday.

Roots

Underlife by Jason Middlebrook
Spring is taking root around the city. Even a sculpture of steel, fiberglass, and mortar seems to be springing to life outside the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Gold Dome

M & T Bank, E. Huron Street
The Gold Dome Bank, a.k.a. Buffalo Savings Bank building, has stood at Main and East Huron Streets since the turn of the 20th century. This neoclassical legacy of E. B . Green and William Sydney Wicks resides prominently amongst the many Buffalo architectural contributions by the prolific Green. Buffalo Savings was the first savings bank in the city of Buffalo and by the end of the 1800's needed a building as impressive as the company itself. Enter Green and Wicks. M and T Bank  currently occupies the building.

Where The Wild Things Are

Wild Things Storefront
Here you'll find artisan crafted jewelry, unique and one of a kind. The store on Lexington has been doing their thing well and for a long while. Wild Things started out in 1988, and today is an anchor on this commercial corner of the residential street that was also the birthplace of the Lexington Co-op. Unique as the street they occupy, the store features talented local artists and others, always guaranteed to make you stop, and at the very least, window shop, with their delightful displays.

Cottage

The Gardener's Cottage
The Martin Gardener's Cottage was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as one of the residential buildings on the Darwin Martin Complex. Wright and his team designed the complementing landscape for the Martin home and the on sight gardener would tend to the extensive landscaping needs of the property. Not a bad gig, especially considering the lovely cottage the gardener and family would call home. The structure was finished around 1908 after Martin's sister's home, the Barron House was completed in 1905.  Between the two residential structures, there are also the Conservatory and Carriage House all to the rear of the main residence of the Martin House Property.

Blossoming Friends

April Afternoon Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden in Delaware Park,  just below the Historical Society, was dedicated as a symbol of our friendship with the city of Kanazawa, Japan. We give a shout out to our friends in Kanawaza who have reached full bloom this weekend of Cherry Blossom season in Japan. We still have a few weeks to go in our neck of the woods.
