Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church

Ethiopia was one of the birthplaces of the early Christian church and Ethiopian Orthodoxy continues a practice of Christianity filled with traditions and ritual dating back 17 centuries. Debre Selam Medhane Alem Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has been serving the faithful of the Buffalo area since 2003.  The church building, on Tonawanda Street in the neighborhood of Blackrock, was consecrated in 2013. The congregation follows a branch of the faith that separated from Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, which falls under the auspices of the Coptic Church. In 1959, the Orthodox denomination of Tewahedo was granted its own Patriarch by the Coptic Pope.
