The Mansion on Delaware

Celebrating summer and the elegance of one of Buffalo's most beautiful homes, now a boutique hotel, The Mansion opens its grounds and kitchen to visitors. The Cocktails on the Lawn Series will seat visitors on the the hotel's lawn in a communal setting to experience a themed culinary sampling. Live music serenades guests with a rooftop band. Two more evenings in the series remain.

One of the new faces of the First Ward, 301 Ohio Street boasts 21 units right on the Buffalo River, many with views. Ellicott Development finished this project  in 2016. Good luck getting one of the two or single bedroom apartments. There's another new build down the street, soon to reach completion. Twenty years ago, who would have imagined the river through the Old First Ward as hot development territory? "The worm has turned," as they say.

Ulrich's

Ulrich's Tavern on Ellicott Street

Ulrich's dates back to 1868. One of, if not  Buffalo's Oldest Tavern finds itself front row to the city's newest revival in the medical corridor on  Ellicott Street. True to its heritage, the tavern still serves a German menu in an interior that hasn't changed much in 149 years. The historic structure is 90% tavern and 10% museum. Check out the great old photos of Buffalo that adorn the walls and possibly get a little history lesson from the staff if the mood strikes them.

French Connection

The French Connection Sculpture

The French Connection is still together on Perry Street outside KeyBank Center. The sculpture honors the hockey legends Perreault, Martin and Robert, specifically, while generally honoring the glory days of Buffalo Sabres Hockey.

Tewksbury

Tewksbury Lodge

Tewksbury Lodge starts its second season on the Buffalo River adjacent to River Fest Park. The lodge is named for the ill-fated ship that took out the Michigan Avenue Bridge, as well as flooding the surrounding neighborhood  in 1959. There are plenty of tales of who was to blame for the "Incident", but today there's only kudos for all the hard work that has turned a once decrepit stretch of riverfront into a symbol of Buffalo's rebirth. The Lodge is available for banquets and serves lunch and dinner several days out of the week with brunch on the weekend. There is also a river dock for park access.

Larkin Center

Larkin Center of Commerce on Seneca Street

One of the buildings at the center of the ever inspirational Larnkinville revival is the Larkin Center of Commerce. The renovated structure is one of the incubators for the repopulation of city businesses. Time to repurpose those strip malls in the burbs. The massive center is actually several buildings that have been connected over the years. The restored complex hopes to harken back to the booming days of the Larkin Co. or, at least, to the impressive white stucco facade of the 1950s.

The Darwin Martin House celebrated the birthday of Frank Lloyd Wright, born this day in 1867. The man of honor made an appearance, albeit 2 dimensionally. Birthday craziness, including $1.50 tours, ensued at the house, which was completed in 1905. The house has just seen the completion of renovation on its first floor, an undertaking of many years. Wright's masterpiece, one of Parkside's favorite homes, is located on Jewett Parkway.

A week's worth of Gay Pride events culminated today with the Pride Parade marching down the rainbow flag festooned Elmwood Avenue. Celebrations continue throughout the city as Buffalo hosts its 26th annual Gay Pride Week.
